Meta Secures Ownership of the Threads.com Domain Name

Threads.com

In a move that could simplify user access, Meta has officially acquired the domain name Threads.com. This development is part of Meta’s broader strategy to enhance the reach of its Threads platform, a text-based social network launched as a companion to Instagram. Up until now, users had to visit “Threads.net” to access the platform. With the recent acquisition, accessing Threads on the web just got easier.

Background on the Acquisition

According to TechCrunch, the domain was previously owned by a messaging company also named Threads, which operated under that name until its acquisition by Spotify in June. Once the original Threads ceased to exist as a separate entity, Meta was able to secure the domain for its own platform.

Domain registration data now shows that Threads.com is under the ownership of Instagram, Meta’s subsidiary. Although Meta has yet to provide details on how it plans to use the domain, it’s clear that this acquisition will reduce confusion for users trying to access the Threads platform.

What This Means for Users

While the switch from Threads.net to Threads.com won’t have a major impact on the platform’s functionality, it does offer users a more memorable and intuitive URL. This change will likely help alleviate the confusion caused by the previous popularity of the Threads.com domain, which saw a spike in traffic after Meta’s platform launch as users mistakenly visited the wrong website.

Going forward, users will be able to access Threads with either Threads.net or Threads.com, but the .com domain could become the default.

What’s Next?

Despite the domain acquisition, Meta hasn’t provided any details on whether there will be additional changes to Threads.com or the platform’s web interface. However, the move is a clear signal that Meta is consolidating its digital presence for Threads and making it more accessible for a broader audience.
