India’s latest fast-bowling prodigy, Mayank Yadav, has set the cricketing world abuzz with his explosive T20I debut against Bangladesh, where he clocked an impressive speed of 156.7 km/h. As a result, he is now on the verge of joining the prestigious ‘Million Dollar Club’ in the Indian Premier League (IPL), according to insights from an IPL insider.
IPL Retention Rules
The IPL retention rules state that any uncapped player who makes their international debut in any of the three formats before the auctions will be promoted to the capped player category. This elevation significantly affects their retention prices for the next season.
For the upcoming IPL season, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) must allocate a minimum of ₹11 crore (approximately USD 1.31 million) to retain Mayank’s services. Similarly, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will also need to pay a minimum of ₹11 crore to keep all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who debuted in the same T20I match.
Rising Retention Values
The retention prices for capped players are structured as follows:
- ₹18 crore for the No. 1 retention
- ₹14 crore for the No. 2 retention
- ₹11 crore for the No. 3 retention
For the fourth and fifth retention spots, the prices escalate back to ₹18 crore and ₹14 crore, respectively.
While the deadline for announcing the retention list is set for October 31, insiders suggest that LSG will undoubtedly prioritize retaining Mayank as one of their top three players.
Key Players in LSG’s Roster
With a roster that includes veteran KL Rahul, South African star Quinton de Kock, West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran, and Australian Marcus Stoinis, it is clear that LSG’s management, including head coach Justin Langer and mentor Zaheer Khan, will be keen to secure one of India’s most promising fast bowlers.
“There’s no way that LSG will let go of a rare talent like Mayank,” stated an IPL insider who requested anonymity. “They have invested in him over the past two seasons, and he will definitely be among the top three retentions.”
The Future for Nitish Reddy
Unlike Mayank, Nitish Kumar Reddy may face a different scenario with SRH. The team is likely to retain high-profile players like Pat Cummins, Travis Head, and Abhishek Sharma as their first three choices. Given this context, Reddy is expected to be considered as a Right To Match (RTM) candidate in future auctions.
As Mayank Yadav stands on the brink of an IPL milestone, cricket fans eagerly await the official announcements that will confirm his status as one of the league’s highest-paid players, solidifying his position as a future star in Indian cricket.
