Comcast Confirms Major Data Breach Affecting 230,000 Customers' Information

In a significant blow to customer data security, Comcast has confirmed a massive data breach that has exposed the personal information of more than 230,000 customers. The breach, caused by a third-party vulnerability, includes sensitive details such as social security numbers, names, addresses, and dates of birth.

The incident came to light when Bleeping Computer reported that Comcast filed a notification with the State of Maine, revealing the breach. According to the filing, the data of 237,703 customers was compromised. The breach originated from Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS), a debt collection agency that works with Comcast. FBCS was responsible for managing customer data when the breach occurred.

Comcast reported that the breach took place in February 2024, with FBCS informing them about the incident in July. The company also disclosed that the exposed data was from around 2021. In response to the breach, Comcast has since terminated its contract with FBCS.

While this breach was tied to a third-party vendor, the incident has raised concerns over Comcast’s ability to safeguard its customers’ personal information. This is not the first time the company has faced such an issue. In 2023, Comcast experienced an even larger breach, affecting 35 million Xfinity customers due to a security vulnerability.

With the exposure of such sensitive information, the risk of identity theft and fraud looms large. The compromised data could potentially be misused in a variety of ways, creating serious consequences for the affected customers.

This breach underscores the need for stronger data security measures across the industry, particularly for companies handling sensitive customer information.
